Project Overview

A diary application facilitates users in effortlessly capturing fleeting moments of the present.

Project Duration

April 30 - May 1, 2022 (2 days)

The Problem

The significance of mental health is increasingly recognized in nowadays.

The Goal

Keeping mindfulness of the present is a key strategy for maintaining well-being.

In response to tight timelines and an agile design approach, I conducted interviews with three individuals to explore their perceptions of emotions and their preferred methods for recording them.

The key takeaway is the importance of intuitively capturing emotions, where both words and visuals prove effective in articulating feelings. Accurate documentation of emotional changes within a specific timeframe emerges as a crucial aspect of the process.

It is crucial to observe users' life patterns and pinpoint the factors triggering negative moods. By identifying these triggers, users can proactively avoid them, leading to a more positive and fulfilling life. Armed with the knowledge of their triggers, users can strategize and implement effective plans to minimize their impact on daily life.

Design Journey

Capturing user mood changes is a nuanced process that demands finesse, ensuring it doesn't become cumbersome and adversely impact the overall user experience.

Consequently, I opted to design a concise recording page presented in a singular card format. This approach allows for seamless integration, whether on an iOS widget or within the Android flow window.

Persona: Jacob

30-year-old | Software Engineer | Dallas, TX

“I want to be as relaxed as a gust of wind every day, not troubled by mood swings.”

Problem statement

Jacob is a software engineer needs to determine what the things trigger his emotion change, because he want to be concentrated on work.

Frustration

Easily forget how is my mood come and go.

Goal

Easily forget how is my mood come and go.

The process involves six steps from initiation to completion.

By implementing prompts to capture and document the user's mood in real-time, the objective can be accomplished seamlessly through a dedicated widget on the home screen.

Design Start

Set up page

The initial element I conceptualized is the recording reminder, allowing users to customize it based on their wake-up time and specify the duration for each recording session. To ensure minimal disruption to sleep, also implemented an end time feature in the design.

Furthermore, I've implemented two distinct methods for capturing users' emotions - Widget & Banner notification. These options serve as the most user-friendly means to achieve their recording objectives. Once the setup is complete, users can seamlessly commence recording their initial mood.

Samples

This depicts the user's mobile interface, featuring the Widget and notification banner. Additionally, distinct notification banners have been crafted specifically for prompting record updates and checking diary mood summaries.

Notifications on watch

Users with an Apple Watch can effortlessly swipe through emojis to efficiently select and record their current mood.

Recording page

After configuring the notification reminder, users initiate their first record. I maintained a minimalist design for the recording process, ensuring users can effortlessly achieve their goals with simplicity and ease.

Color plays a pivotal role in eliciting emotions, ranging from positive and cheerful to somber or negative.

After selected mood emoji, Jacob will write down the reason or upload the picture.

Diary page

Jacob recorded a singular mood. The page exclusively displays the cause of his distress, providing insight into the factors that led to his upset. If Jacob opts not to upload the reason, the page remains blank.

Seems like Jacob need to tidy up his room today. And if he doesn’t like this mood, it also can be deleted.

Add emotions page

Jacob could click below button to add more emotions.

From second mood to third mood.

(As time went by, his mood got better and better.)

Calendar Emoji page

Jacob click calendar to see this month’s mood.

First is emoji mood, which can tell everyday’s emotion and average emotion.

Jacob also could switch to the color mode of emotion glance.

Calendar Color page

Color glance is more straightforward to show Jacob’s mood change.

And average color is telling Jacob he has done the good job on emotion control on this month.

With a focus on user accessibility for color blindness, I introduced distinct shapes as replacements for colors, ensuring that individuals with color blindness can effortlessly discern their emotion summaries.
